Crusoe Sells Its Troubled Wyoming Data-Center Project to Google, Which Plans a $17 Billion Investment

Crusoe, the Denver-based data-center developer, has sold an incomplete data-center project in southeastern Wyoming to Google, according to TechCrunch, which reported on November 6, 2026 that Crusoe confirmed the sale in a company newsroom update. Neither company disclosed the price. Bloomberg first reported the deal in June, per TechCrunch.
Details in the report
- Scale: Crusoe announced the project last year with plans to eventually scale it to 10 gigawatts of power capacity. Google announced plans to invest $17 billion to develop the campus, in a company blog post.
- Why it was troubled: Google had tried and failed to become a customer for the project. It reportedly raised concerns about its “cost and construction timeline under Crusoe’s management” before taking over development.
- Partners: Tallgrass, a Blackstone-backed infrastructure company, was Crusoe’s partner on the original announcement. Google still works with Crusoe, which is developing another data center for Google near Amarillo, Texas. Crusoe’s other customers include Oracle and OpenAI (Abilene, Texas), Microsoft, Meta and Jane Street.
- The company: Crusoe is eight years old and was recently valued at $30.9 billion.
TechCrunch’s framing
TechCrunch says the deal shows how hard it is for independent developers to deliver massive projects on time and on budget, given challenges in securing equipment and power, and that growing local opposition can further complicate development. Lens covered related power constraints in an earlier post on converted jet engines and local opposition in a post on ballot measures.
