New York Times Reportedly in Exclusive Talks to Buy Letterboxd for $330 Million

The New York Times Company has “entered exclusive negotiations” to acquire the movie-tracking platform Letterboxd for $330 million, according to a Times report relayed by TechCrunch on November 5, 2026. The Times Company declined to comment to its own newspaper, and TechCrunch’s article includes no statement from Letterboxd.
What TechCrunch reports about Letterboxd
- Letterboxd is an online platform for movie fans, sometimes compared to Goodreads for films. It is free, with a paid subscription that unlocks advanced features.
- It reported 3 million users in January 2021 and 28 million by April 2026, with more than half under 35.
- Its projected earnings for this year are estimated at $15 million, about 4.5% of the reported price.
Background
TechCrunch previously reported that Letterboxd was seeking a new owner. Per the Times, A24 and Sony were interested in buying it, but A24 was “priced out.”
