Microsoft Booked About $10 Billion From OpenAI in One Quarter

Microsoft recorded about $10 billion in revenue from its commercial arrangements with OpenAI, including revenue-sharing payments, in the quarter ended September 30, according to a regulatory filing made Wednesday. That is nearly 11% of the company’s $92.3 billion in quarterly revenue, and the first quarter of its fiscal 2027.
OpenAI-related revenue for all of fiscal 2026 was $24.1 billion, so the latest quarter implies about $40 billion a year at its current pace. The filing does not say how much came from revenue sharing and how much from Azure cloud services.
Microsoft also reported $7.2 billion in receivables from OpenAI at the end of September, up from $6 billion in June. TechCrunch notes that this is money OpenAI owes for earlier transactions, not additional revenue.
Under an April 2026 agreement, OpenAI will keep sharing revenue with Microsoft through 2030, subject to a cap, and may work with competing cloud providers. OpenAI reportedly gives Microsoft 20% of its revenue under an earlier deal, though neither company has confirmed that percentage. Microsoft’s stake in OpenAI slipped to 24% in September from about 25% in June, and Microsoft did not say why.
